Three foods to limit for better teeth
Everyone wants to have a healthy and beautiful smile, but sometimes we may overindulge in foods that compromise our teeth’s health. Making sure to watch out for foods that may cause harm, as well as following a good brushing and flossing routine, is essential to maintaining good oral health. When considering your meal plan, keep in mind eating right promotes healthier teeth. Some foods to limit for the sake of your teeth’s health include:
1. Citrus fruit
Although citrus fruit is a healthy and delicious snack, its high acidity can damage teeth if eaten regularly. Constant exposure to citrus acid will cause erosion of tooth enamel, the hard outer coating of the teeth. Once substantial tooth erosion occurs, it is irreversible. When enjoying your favorite citrus fruit, wait at least 30 minutes after eating to brush your teeth. Brushing too soon after eating acidic foods will wear down your tooth enamel.
Coffee drinkers are more prone to developing surface stains on their teeth that will eventually give a dull, yellow appearance. In addition, if you add sugar to your coffee, that can increase your risk for cavities. Try drinking water on the side with your favorite coffee beverage to help offset surface stains, and be sure to rinse thoroughly with water after you finish your morning beverage.
3. Soda and other sweets
When you eat sugary foods or sip drinks that are high in sugar, plaque bacteria uses that sugar to produce acids that eat away at tooth enamel. Most caffeinated beverages, such as soda, contain acids that are harmful to teeth. If you do drink soda or eat sweets, be sure to rinse with water. As with citrus fruit, it is also a good idea to wait at least 30 minutes before brushing your teeth to help protect your enamel.
Following these tips with a proper brushing and flossing routine will keep you on the right path to lifelong oral health and a beautiful smile!
