Do you envy those perfect-looking teeth when your favorite celebrity smiles? In many cases, those ideal smiles are the result of porcelain veneers. Ask your dentist if veneers might be a good option for you.
What are porcelain veneers?
Porcelain veneers are composed of several thin layers of ceramic material that is applied to the original tooth enamel. A light-sensitive resin is used to bond the veneer to the original tooth.
Who can benefit from veneers?
Anyone with discolored or misshapen teeth can potentially benefit from porcelain veneers. The treatment is also a good option for people with gaps between teeth, broken teeth and compromised tooth positions creating minor bite-related problems.
The advantages of veneers
It’s difficult to tell the difference between a veneer and a natural tooth. However, the benefits of veneers include resistance to tea and coffee stains and cigarette smoke. Unlike crowns, natural teeth remain almost intact. Your dentist will remove only a minimal amount of enamel, about a millimeter, to fit the veneer. Veneers can make even the most discolored teeth bright again.
Are there any downsides?
You should be sure that veneers are the right choice for you, because the procedure is not reversible. However, adjustments can be made to your veneers and they can be replaced as necessary. In addition, you may experience some sensitivity to hot and cold temperatures at first, but this effect usually disappears within a few days. Although porcelain veneers are strong, you do need to take care to not chew hard objects.
If you feel that porcelain veneers are right for you, the first step is an evaluation and a cosmetic imaging appointment with a dentist who has a specialty in veneers. Your smile will be analyzed, and a diagnostic mock-up created so that you can “try on” veneers and any other options to see what the final result will look like.
