New technique offers early intervention before a filling is necessary
ICON, which is short for infiltration concept, is a new technique that is used to treat early tooth decay by filling white spot lesions before they turn into cavities. There are a variety of factors that lead to white spots on teeth including nutrition, genetics, excessive fluoride intake and orthodontic braces. They are actually areas of decalcified enamel that can lead to tooth decay.
How does ICON prevent tooth decay?
ICON works by capillary action: plugging and reinforcing the pore system of the white spot with a light-curable resin that requires no shade matching and blends relatively well with the rest of the tooth. With this procedure, lesions are stabilized without altering the anatomy or color of the tooth.
This new technology is minimally invasive and halts the progression of tooth decay without drilling or anesthesia. ICON requires no drilling, anesthesia, bleaching, repeat visits or bonding touch-up.
Is ICON an option for you?
If you have a history of orthodontic therapy, poor dental hygiene, or high acid exposure, talk to your dentist about ICON as a possible treatment option for you. It provides a simple, painless solution, and it can help you avoid many more rigorous and invasive restorative treatments later on.
