Taking good care of your tooth enamel matters
Unfortunately, men and women who have formed habits, such as compulsively chewing ice or the ends of pens, could be harming their teeth for good. These habits can impact your enamel, and taking great care of your tooth enamel matters. Here’s why:
Why enamel matters
Enamel matters because it is the layer that protects your teeth.
“Enamel helps protect your teeth from daily use, such as chewing, biting, crunching and grinding…Enamel also insulates the teeth from potentially painful temperatures and chemicals.” (WebMD)
If your enamel wears away, your body does not make more. Furthermore, once your enamel has worn away, your teeth will decay more quickly. That’s because enamel protects the outer layer of the tooth. Once bacteria and acids breech this defense, teeth are extremely vulnerable.
How to take care of your enamel
In addition to practicing good oral hygiene, be sure to keep damaging non-food items out of your mouth. That’s a good first step, but even edible items can wear away your enamel: excessive sugary soft drinks, hard candies and ice chips have all been known to damage tooth enamel. Limiting (or eliminating) their intake will go a long way toward protecting your teeth.
