There are many reasons why amalgam or silver fillings are no longer the best option for your dental needs. Because the best dental care options are top priority in our office, we only offer white fillings (composites) for the following reasons:
- Amalgam tooth restorations lack long-term durability, especially when it comes to larger restorations. Composite is more versatile, regardless of the filling size. With amalgam, the material begins to lift, crack or break off over time, which allows bacteria to creep in. Because the material is opaque, it is difficult to see from an X-ray if there is decay until the problem is extensive. If the tooth becomes inflamed, you could end up with a root canal or a crown.
- Composite fillings bond to the teeth better, which strengthens the tooth and prevents further breakage or damage. This bonding creates a better seal, preventing further decay. With amalgam fillings, there is no adhesion to the tooth. The material is essentially packed in, which creates long-term problems and does not serve to strengthen the tooth. The material may act as a wedge and, in time, can cause the tooth to crack or break.
- While amalgam fillings may be the least expensive option, they are simply not aesthetically appealing. With composite fillings, the color is adjustable and can be matched to your tooth color. They are easier to polish and provide a more natural appearance. Your smile is important and visible, dark fillings can leave you feeling self-conscious when interacting with others. Tooth-colored fillings give you a great deal of confidence in your smile.
Starting out with the right material for your filling ensures a healthier and longer life for your tooth restoration.
